19. Visit the the most dramatic gorge of them all – Redbank Gorge. Redbank Gorge is another permanent water hole which is perfect for floating. The gorge walls are absolutely huge and the scenery feels incredibly dramatic. The gorge is just over a kilometre from the car park on a largely flat trail.. Starting in Alice Springs and ending at Mt Sonder, it follows the West Macs and is not for the faint-hearted. First stop on the Larapinta Trail: Euro Ridge. Hikers need to fill up water bottles at tanks along the way and organise food drops. The Larapinta is broken into 12 sections and the best time to set off is during winter (June-August).

Alice Springs is in the heart of the Outback and has extreme variations in temperature. The summers here are stiflingly hot all day and night, with the winters being warm in the day and very cold at night.
