Dead space is the volume of air that is inhaled that does not take part in the gas exchange, because it either remains in the conducting airways or reaches alveoli that are not perfused or poorly perfused. It means that not all the air in each breath is available for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.. Anatomic dead space is an important phenomenon in respiratory physiology whereby, owing to the fact that upper airways do not function as locations for gas exchange, and because of the tidal nature of ventilation, there is always a fraction of the inspired air that does not perform a physiologic function of exchanging carbon dioxide for oxygen.

Dead space is created when no ventilation and/or perfusion takes place. Anatomical dead space and anatomical shunts arise from an anatomical deficiencies. Anatomical dead space occurs naturally in areas of the lungs that don’t come in contact with alveoli (like the trachea). In these spaces, the lungs are ventilated and receiving enough air.. This part is known as the conducting zone and it does not take part in gas exchange. The volume of air contained in this conducting zone is known as anatomic dead space. ‘Dead’ sounds kind of ominous but it basically reflects the fact that this air is as good as dead to the body, because you can’t extract oxygen from it.
